    The effect of “gender fit” on fitness app engagement

    The effectiveness of fitness app in health promotion success has been observed and may greatly contribute to large health improvements of the public. However, the actual engagement with these interventions is unexpectedly low. Fitness app developers design Behavior change techniques (BCTs) to enhance user engagement with fitness apps. Although several studies have examined the effectiveness of some BCTs in encouraging user engagement with Internet-based applications in general, investigations remain underspecified. Based on the theory of psychological fit, we focus on the gender boundary condition of the effectiveness of BCTs on user engagement with fitness apps. The purpose of this research is twofold. First, we aim to explore gender differences in preferences for BCTs. The second purpose is to investigate whether there exists “gender fit” effect on user engagement of fitness apps with different BCTs

    Understanding Personalization for Health Behavior Change Applications: A Review and Future Directions

    Health behavior change (HBC) applications hold much promise for promoting healthy lifestyles, such as enhancing physical activity (PA), diet, and sleep. Incorporating personalization strategies is seen as key to designing effective HBC applications. However, researchers and application designers lack knowledge about the different kinds of personalization strategies, how to implement them, and what strategies work. Thus, we reviewed prior empirical studies on personalization for HBC applications and developed a framework to synthesize the prior studies we identified and to provide an integrative view of the personalization strategies, their inputs, and outcomes. Our findings suggest that researchers have much potential to conduct design research that employs demographic and contextual characteristics for personalization and that examines personalization strategies that target HBC applications’ interface and channels. In terms of implementation and adoption, we call for researchers to examine unaddressed issues such as low adherence and contextual barriers for these applications. We also suggest that researchers need to systematically examine the effects of specific personalization strategies on their efficacy. Other than providing an integrative view of extant studies, our study contributes by outlining key directions for future research in this area

    With the widespread use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in organizations, ICTs have become a crucial part of daily work. However, although the implementation of ICTs in organizations has greatly improved the production efficiency and quality, negative outcomes, such as stress, have arisen as well. Stress induced by ICTs in work-specific contexts is termed technostress. This paper theorizes the mediating effects of affective attitudes toward the use of ICTs on the relationship between technostress creators (the independent variable) and end-user performance (the dependent variable). The possible contributions of this paper include: 1) theoretically, the mediating effect of affective attitudes between technostress creators and end-user performance are examined to complement the technostress research model; 2) practically, those interventions found to influence the mediating variables may be used to promote the end-user performance if the mediating effect is significant. The findings of our study may open new door to more cost-effective and powerful solutions for improving the ICTs use effectiveness

    Soy Isoflavones Improve the Spermatogenic Defects in Diet-Induced Obesity Rats through Nrf2/HO-1 Pathway

    Soy isoflavones (SIF) are biologically active compounds of non-steroidal and phenolic properties that are richly present in soybeans, which can reduce the body weight and blood lipids of obese animals. Recently, SIF have been reported to affect reproductive ability in obese male rats. However, the specific mechanism has not been well defined. The aim of the current study was to study the possible mechanisms for the effect of SIF administration on obesity induced spermatogenic defects. Obese rats model induced by high-fat diets were established and gavage treated with 0, 50,150 or 450 mg of SIF/kg body weight/day for 4 weeks. Here, our research shows that obesity resulted in spermatogenic degeneration, imbalance of reproductive hormone, testicular oxidative stress and germ cell apoptosis, whereas evidently recovery effects were observed at 150 and 450 mg/kg SIF. We also have discovered that 150 and 450 mg/kg SIF can activate Nrf2/HO-1 pathway in control of Bcl-2, BAX and cleaved caspase-3 expression with implications in antioxidant protection. Our study indicates the potential mechanism of SIF regulating spermatogenic function in obese rats, and provides a scientific experimental basis for the regulation of biological function of obese male reproductive system by SIF

    Polyphyllin I Promotes Autophagic Cell Death and Apoptosis of Colon Cancer Cells via the ROS-Inhibited AKT/mTOR Pathway

    Colon cancer is a common malignant tumor of the digestive tract, and it is considered among the biggest killers. Scientific and reasonable treatments can effectively improve the survival rate of patients if performed in the early stages. Polyphyllin I (PPI), a pennogenyl saponin isolated from Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis, has exhibited strong anti-cancer activities in previous studies. Here, we report that PPI exhibits a cytotoxic effect on colon cancer cells. PPI suppressed cell viability and induced autophagic cell death in SW480 cells after 12 and 24 h, with the IC50 values 4.9 ± 0.1 μmol/L and 3.5 ± 0.2 μmol/L, respectively. Furthermore, we found PPI induced time-concentration-dependent autophagy and apoptosis in SW480 cells. In addition, down-regulated AKT/mTOR activity was found in PPI-treated SW480 cells. Increased levels of ROS might link to autophagy and apoptosis because reducing the level of ROS by antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) treatment mitigated PPI-induced autophagy and apoptosis. Although we did not know the molecular mechanism of how PPI induced ROS production, this is the first study to show that PPI induces ROS production and down-regulates the AKT/mTOR pathway, which subsequently promotes the autophagic cell death and apoptosis of colon cancer cells. This present study reports PPI as a potential therapeutic agent for colon cancer and reveals its underlying mechanisms of action

    Vascular Risk Factors, Imaging, and Outcomes in Transient Ischemic Attack/Ischemic Stroke Patients with Neuroimaging Evidence of Probable/Possible Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy

    Background. In TIA/ischemic stroke patients, the clinical significance of lobar microbleeds potentially indicating cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is unknown. We assessed vascular risk factors and outcomes, including cognition, in TIA/ischemic stroke patients with neuroimaging evidence of probable/possible CAA. Methods. This prospective cohort was conducted from August 2015 and January 2018 at 40 centers. 2625 participants were collected. Eligible participants were aged at least 55 years. Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score is less than or equal to 26. A total of 1620 patients were included. 1604 (99.0%) and 1582 (97.7%) participants are followed up at 3 and 12 months. The primary outcomes were death or disability (mRS score, 3-6) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) at 3 months and 12 months. Demographic and vascular risk factors were measured at baseline (smoking, alcohol, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, coronary artery disease, ischemic stroke, and transient ischemic attack). Blood samples were collected within 24 hours of admission. MRI was recommended for all patients. MoCA score was evaluated at baseline and follow-up. Results. In total, 291/1620 patients with ischemic stroke/TIA (32.7% female and mean age, 67.8 years) had neuroimaging evidence of probable/possible CAA. Higher age, history of hypertension, atrial fibrillation, ischemic stroke, alcohol, and high glucose at the admission were more common in the patients. Mean MoCA changed from 21.4 at 3 months (SD 5.2) to 22.3 at 12 months (SD 4.7), difference 0.3 (SD 3.8). At the 3-month and 12-month follow-up, there were significant differences in age, education level, and sex among different cognitive groups. Higher age, lower education (less than high school), and female sex were the predictors of changing in MoCA score from 3 months to 12 months. Moreover, age (more than 66 years) and education (less than high school) are strongly associated with MoCA at 3- and 12-month follow-up. 30 of 286 (10.5%) and 37 of 281 (13.2%) patients had poor outcome of death or disability (modified Rankin Scale score, 3-6) at follow-up 3 and 12 months. Cortical superficial siderosis (cSS) was associated with higher mRS at follow-up. cSS status, cSS count 1-2, cSS strictly lobar, and strictly deep might be the risks of outcomes in adjusted analyses. Conclusion. This study suggested that an increasing number of vascular risk factors and imaging markers were significantly associated with outcomes of TIA/ischemic stroke patients with CAA pattern. Male, young patients with high education should get better cognitive recovery

    Spatiotemporal Heterogeneity in Human Schistosoma japonicum Infection at Village Level in Hubei Province, China

    The spatiotemporal dynamics of Schistosoma japonicum, combined with temporal heterogeneity among regions of different epidemic areal-types from a microscale viewpoint might capture the local change dynamics and thus aid in optimizing the combinations of precise schistosomiasis control measures. The prevalence data on schistosomiasis infection from 2007 to 2012 in the 30 most endemic counties of Hubei Province, Central China, were appended to the village-level administrative division polygon layer. Anselin local Moran’s I, a retrospective space–time scan statistic and a multilevel-growth model analysis framework, was used to investigate the spatiotemporal pattern of schistosomiasis resident infection rate (RIR) at the village level and how natural geographical environment influence the schistosomiasis RIR over time. Two spatiotemporal high-risk clusters and continuous high-rate clusters were identified mainly in the embankment region across flooding areas of lakes connected with the Yangze and Hanjiang Rivers. Moreover, 12 other clusters and outlier evolution modes were detected to be scattered across the continuous high-rate clusters. Villages located in embankment region had the highest initial values and most rapidly reduced RIRs over time, followed by villages located in marshland-and-lake regions and finally by villages located in hilly region. Moreover, initial RIR values and rates of change did significantly vary (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively) irrespective of their epidemic areal-type. These local spatiotemporal heterogeneities could contribute to the formulation of distinct control strategies based on local transmission dynamics and be applied in other endemic areas of schistosomiasis

    Satellite Imagery-Based Identification of High-Risk Areas of <i>Schistosome</i> Intermediate Snail Hosts Spread after Flood

    Snail intermediate host monitoring and control are essential for interrupting the parasitic disease schistosomiasis. Identifying large-scale high-risk areas of snail spread after floods has been greatly facilitated by remote sensing imagery. However, previous studies have usually assumed that all inundation areas carry snails and may have overestimated snail spread areas. Furthermore, these studies only used a single environmental factor to estimate the snail survival risk probability, failing to analyze multiple variables, to accurately distinguish the snail survival risk in the snail spread areas. This paper proposes a systematic framework for early monitoring of snail diffusion to accurately map snail spread areas from remote sensing imagery and enhance snail survival risk probability estimation based on the snail spread map. In particular, the flooded areas are extracted using the Sentinel-1 Dual-Polarized Water Index based on synthetic aperture radar images to map all-weather flooding areas. These flood maps are used to extract snail spread areas, based on the assumption that only inundation areas that spatially interacted with (i.e., are close to) the previous snail distribution regions before flooding are identified as snail spread areas, in order to reduce the misclassification in snail spread area identification. A multiple logistic regression model is built to analyze how various types of snail-related environmental factors, including the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), wetness, river and channel density, and landscape fractal dimension impact snail survival, and estimate its risk probabilities in snail spread area. An experiment was conducted in Jianghan Plain, China, where snails are predominantly linearly distributed along the tributaries and water channels of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The proposed method could accurately map floods under clouds, and a total area of 231.5 km2 was identified as the snail spread area. The snail survival risk probabilities were thus estimated. The proposed method showed a more refined snail spread area and a more reliable degree of snail survival risk compared with those of previous studies. Thus, it is an efficient way to accurately map all-weather snail spread and survival risk probabilities, which is helpful for schistosomiasis interruption
